Project 3
Light
The goal of this project was to design three non-denominational chapels for the Farmingdale State College campus. The interaction between the buildings and natural light was studied to develop concepts for directing and controlling light.
Light Research

Notre Dame du Haut is a modernist Roman Catholic chapel in Ronchamp, France, designed by Le Corbusier and completed in 1955. Known for its sculptural form, thick walls, and dramatic roof, the chapel is celebrated for its innovative use of light and space, creating a powerful spiritual atmosphere.
Openings between the roof and walls as well as angled openings in the wall allow sun rays to shine through at certain angles and illuminate the space.

(Section of Notre Dame du Haut)

The south wall of the chapel has many apertures that allow light to pass through. Each window is pointed at a certain angle and has a thin sheet of glass over it.

There are multiple side chapels/belltowers that act as light cannons
Borrowed functions

The light cannons were inspired by Le Corbusier's Convent La Tourette. and the slit in the roof that allows in a controlled amount of light was inspired by Notre Dame du Haut chapel.

Site Selection

I chose this location because it is secluded so it provides a sense of peace and privacy but it is not hidden from the rest of the campus. There are no buildings nearby to block natural light.
